About the 10 Key Typing test

Our 10 Key Typing test helps you evaluate a candidate’s data entry skills and ensure they have speed and accuracy. Hiring people who can enter numerical data quickly and efficiently is crucial for many business operations, from accounting and finance to sales and marketing.

Speedy and precise data entry enables real-time decision-making, accurate financial reporting, and effective communication with clients, customers, and other stakeholders. It also helps businesses identify trends and opportunities for strategic planning and decision-making.

With our Ten Key Speed test (Numbers only), you evaluate:

  • Numerical data speed and accuracy

  • Proficiency using the numeric keypad (on the right side of most keyboards)

  • Ability to handle high-volume data entry

  • Efficiency in repetitive typing tasks

The prompts on our test provide a randomly generated sequence of integer numbers between two and five digits long. They don’t include mathematical operators or decimal points. As in most data entry software, job applicants must hit “enter” between entries. The results are displayed as a numeric typing speed in keystrokes per hour (KPH speed).

The test is made by a subject-matter expert

TestGorilla team

TestGorilla’s team of assessment experts and engineers has created a series of Typing Speed tests that were researched, defined, and developed within our team. As with all the tests in our test library, the Typing Speed tests underwent assessment and review to ensure the tests meet the highest levels of accuracy before being published.

These tests will continue to be evaluated for constant improvement in line with our standardized revision process for all tests in our Test Library.

Crafted with expert knowledge

TestGorilla’s tests are created by subject matter experts. We assess potential subject-matter experts based on their knowledge, ability, and reputation. Before being published, each test is peer-reviewed by another expert, then calibrated using hundreds of test takers with relevant experience in the subject.

Our feedback mechanisms and unique algorithms allow our subject-matter experts to constantly improve their tests.

Any tool can have functions—bells and whistles. Not every tool comes armed with staff passionate about making the user experience positive.

The TestGorilla team only offers useful insights to user challenges, they engage in conversation.

For instance, I recently asked a question about a Python test I intended to implement. Instead of receiving “oh, that test would work perfectly for your solution,” or, “at this time we’re thinking about implementing a solution that may or may not…” I received a direct and straightforward answer with additional thoughts to help shape the solution.

I hope that TestGorilla realizes the value proposition in their work is not only the platform but the type of support that’s provided.

For a bit of context—I am a diversity recruiter trying to create a platform that removes bias from the hiring process and encourages the discovery of new and unseen talent.

Why are 10 key speed skills important to employers?

Good key typing speed helps employees perform well in data entry, accounting, or finance roles that rely on precise numerical input. As a result, you can experience several benefits when using a KPH test to hire employees for your business:

  • Increased productivity: Employees can process data faster and complete more tasks in less time, which helps your business stay ahead of deadlines

  • Better accuracy: Skilled typists enter data correctly, which helps you reduce costly errors in financial reports, inventory management, and important documents

  • Improved decision-making: Fast and reliable data entry supports real-time data analysis, which enables you to respond quickly to market changes, customer needs, and emerging trends

  • Cost savings: Efficient data entry reduces the need for extensive verification and correction processes, which saves time and resources

  • Precise reporting and compliance: Strong 10 key speed skills help ensure that all entries meet compliance standards, supporting accurate tax reporting, auditing, and other regulatory requirements

  • Increased customer satisfaction: These skills help employees manage invoices, process orders, and update records, which maintains high standards of customer service and satisfaction

Our skills tests can help you screen candidates quickly to discover whether they have the right numerical skills for the job and improve your return on investment.

For example, Ocean Outdoor UK used several role-specific tests and our Attention to Detail test to find new members for its finance team. Our talent assessments helped the company hire faster and reduce unsuccessful hires by 44%.
