Pre-employment screening is the best way to test a candidate’s proficiency and ensure they are the right fit for your organization.

You can use skills-based tests to remove human bias from the hiring process and consistently hire the best candidates for open positions.

The right pre-employment screening software can help you assess candidates effectively and make data-driven hiring decisions. This guide compares TestGorilla and Toggl Hire so you can choose the best platform for your recruitment needs.

How does TestGorilla work?

TestGorilla is a pre-employment screening platform that offers 400+ tests to assess candidates on a wide variety of skills and qualities.

TestGorilla's new homepage

Hiring managers can pick from role-specific skills tests – like proficiency in Salesforce CRM, programming skills, or technical SEO – to match almost any job position. These tests are recommended based on the job role and can be customized. There are also tests for language, personality, culture, situational judgment, and cognitive ability.

TestGorilla also lets you create custom assessments easily. You can mix and match different tests relevant to the role you’re hiring for and add custom questions to each test when needed.

All our tests are created in consultation with subject-matter experts and undergo robust quality-control measures to remove any bias during the hiring process.

TestGorilla can drive better hiring practices in organizations of all sizes, from startups to large enterprises. Our platform aims to create a collaborative environment where your hiring team can easily communicate with candidates, as well as compare and share their test results.

How does Toggl Hire work?

Toggl Hire is a skills assessment platform with more than 140 skills tests. The library includes personality tests, culture tests, language tests, and role-specific tests like digital marketing tests. Toggl Hire’s tests are primarily for software development, technical, marketing, and customer support roles.

The platform lets hiring managers add custom questions to existing assessments and create tests from scratch. You can “stack” pre-built assessments that consist of homework tasks, video questions, skills tests, and more for a full picture of your applicant’s skills.

There are only three language tests on Toggl Hire – English, German, and Spanish – and there are no options to test the different proficiency levels in these languages. The Toggl Hire platform itself is available only in English.

TestGorilla vs. Toggl Hire: Functionalities for hiring developers

Programming skills tests can determine whether applicants for developer roles actually have the abilities listed on their resumes and the skills required for the position.

Hiring developers with TestGorilla

TestGorilla offers dozens of tests for more than 20 programming languages to test developer skills. A language-agnostic test enables candidates to answer coding challenges in whichever programming language they’re most comfortable using. You can also test a candidate’s knowledge of databases, frameworks like React Native, and smart contracts using Solidity.

For a thorough developer assessment, TestGorilla supports custom coding challenges and debugging tests.

TestGorilla speeds up developer assessments by automatically scoring programming tests.

Hiring developers with Toggl Hire

Toggl Hire has various tests to assess candidate skills in C, C++, Node.js, Python, SQLite, and other developer tools and languages. However, it doesn’t support custom coding challenges or code debugging tests. Toggl Hire offers a fully automated screening process. This means the platform offers automatic test grading and automatic candidate filtering by score. Hiring managers are also able to set a minimum pass score for applicants. The platform then screens the test results to pick the best candidates who scored above that benchmark.

TestGorilla vs. Toggl Hire: Video interviews

Video interviews reduce time to hire and enable hiring managers to see a candidate’s personality, cultural fit, and problem-solving skills. They also help determine the best candidates to proceed to the next stage of the hiring process.

TestGorilla’s video interviews

TestGorilla enables recruiters to add one-way video questions to any test. Candidates must record a video response to answer these questions.

You can limit the amount of recording attempts a candidate can make and the maximum length of their responses to 30, 60, or 120 seconds.

Once a candidate submits their responses, you can watch them on any device. You can rate responses and leave comments to involve the entire hiring team in the process. You can also play back videos at your preferred speed.

Toggl Hire’s video interviews

Toggl Hire enables recruiters to create video interviews with a maximum of three questions. You can select these questions from its library or create your own.

Toggl hire video hiring

To ease pre-interview jitters, recruiters can record short intro videos to introduce themselves, the company, and the role.

You can invite candidates to respond using a link. They can submit video responses within the maximum time limit of two minutes. However, Toggl Hire doesn’t record the number of recording attempts made.

Hiring teams can review and rate answers to decide on the ideal candidates. You can also leave comments on the candidate’s responses which the whole hiring team can see.

TestGorilla vs. Toggl Hire: Candidate experience and company branding

A good hiring experience encourages candidates to choose your company over competitors. This is important when trying to recruit top talent who may have offers from multiple companies.

Many candidates believe that their experience during the hiring process reflects how a company treats its employees. Therefore, a poor experience could turn them away.

Branding also creates a memorable hiring experience and boosts your company image.

The candidate experience with TestGorilla

TestGorilla provides an exceptional candidate experience. Our mobile-friendly platform lets candidates take tests anytime, from anywhere.

TestGorilla removes obstacles and encourages higher completion rates by enabling candidates to attempt tests without logging in or creating individual accounts.

All our tests take only 10-15 minutes to complete, while assessments last between 30-60 minutes. This is a reasonable timeframe for most candidates and is better than asking them to write lengthy cover letters.

Candidates also get access to TestGorilla’s customer support team and help center to get answers to any questions quickly. Applicants who take assessments in English have the option to create a TestGorilla account to view their results.

In addition, TestGorilla enables custom branding, along with intro and outro videos.

Our platform also simplifies communication with candidates by updating them on their statuses through the hiring process and sending out notifications if they are rejected.

The candidate experience with Toggl Hire

The candidate experience with Toggl Hire is straightforward. You can create a skills test and share the link to invite candidate responses. You can also add a short intro video for each assessment.

Candidates must create a Toggl Hire account in order to complete their assessment. Most assessments on Toggl Hire take 15 minutes to complete. However, more in-depth assessments can take up to an hour.

Both candidates and hiring managers get instant access to test results. You can customize the results page to ask for more details about candidates (such as their contact information) and collect feedback on your assessment.

You can also add a custom link at the end of a candidate’s assessment. This can lead to your home page or another webpage of your choosing.

Toggl Hire has communication features like customizable email templates for rejections and invitations to progress to the next stage.

TestGorilla vs. Toggl Hire: Enterprise and startup friendliness

A dynamic pre-employment screening tool that caters to businesses of all sizes is especially helpful to accommodate the growth and changing hiring needs of your company.

Integration with your applicant tracking system (ATS) and features that simplify candidate management are also useful.

TestGorilla’s enterprise and startup friendliness

TestGorilla helps small and medium-sized businesses and enterprises create an efficient hiring process. We offer payment plans suited to your business size and hiring needs – and all plans let you assess an unlimited number of candidates.

Our platform also integrates with most ATS applications – so you can move candidates from one stage of the hiring process to the next without data loss or delays. Your hiring team can also collaborate easily since TestGorilla enables everyone on your team to review and comment on candidate reports.

Enterprises and large businesses can use the TestGorilla API to build custom integrations with tools they use throughout the hiring process.

TestGorilla has localized websites in 12 languages, making global and remote hiring easier. Our platform also supports role-based permissions for teams, bulk actions, and bulk invitations to enable HR teams in larger companies to manage candidates easily. Bulk actions include bulk reminders and rejections.

In addition, TestGorilla is GDPR-compliant, so you don’t have to worry about managing applicants’ data.

You can also add public links to job advertisements and use a different link for each job board. This can track which source leads to the most applicants and which has the most qualified candidates.

Toggl Hire’s enterprise and startup friendliness

Toggl Hire is ideal for companies that need to assess a limited number of candidates for each role. Only its highest-tier plan enables you to assess an unlimited number of candidates.

Toggl Hire has native integrations for two ATS applications – Workable and Greenhouse – as well as integrations with Zapier and Slack. It also has a public API for custom integrations. The platform is available only in English, which can make hiring internationally more challenging. It also doesn’t offer unique public links for different job sites, making it harder to track which source generates the best candidates.

TestGorilla vs. Toggl Hire: Anti-cheating measures

Cheating during assessments disrupts the hiring process. Candidates who cheat can leapfrog more qualified and better-suited applicants in assessments, significantly impacting your company.

Your skills assessment software must have extensive anti-cheating measures to prevent this from happening.

TestGorilla’s anti-cheating measures

TestGorilla ensures all candidates complete tests fairly by implementing a range of anti-cheating measures. These include:

  • IP address logging to prevent the same candidate from applying multiple times

  • Question randomization for every test

  • Replacement of questions before overexposure

  • Webcam snapshots during the test (with permission)

  • Disablement of copy and paste so candidates can’t paste external information

  • Time limits on tests

  • Full-screen tracking that alerts you if a candidate exits full-screen mode (for example, to switch to another screen and research an answer) during their assessment

Toggl Hire’s anti-cheating measures

Toggl Hire prevents cheating using social verification through LinkedIn, GitHub, or Facebook and restricts candidates to only one attempt for each test.

The platform randomizes tests so that each applicant will see a different set of questions. Toggl Hire can detect if multiple attempts are made from the same browser and flags candidates that copy test questions or paste answers.

Toggl Hire also flags abnormalities like email similarities or tests that are completed too quickly (in less than five minutes). It also alerts you if a candidate uses the copy and paste function.

TestGorilla vs. Toggl Hire: Reporting and analytics

Analytics and reporting features help HR teams rank candidates accurately and can also be used to improve your company’s pre-screening process.

TestGorilla’s reporting and analytics features

TestGorilla provides detailed candidate reports that show the overall performance and results for each test. These reports are available in PDF, XLSX, and CSV formats, which simplify sharing and improve collaboration. Members of your hiring team can comment on candidates’ results or responses to individual questions to facilitate collaboration in your hiring process.

TestGorilla reporting and analytics

Reports display a candidate’s overall assessment score, as well as their score on each test. Individual tests are broken down into skill areas, and results in the form of bars represent how well candidates performed in those areas. You can assign custom weights to each test to calculate an overall score that emphasizes the most important skills for a role.

Our platform automatically ranks candidates based on scoring benchmarks. You can also view detailed reports of all current and past candidates. Finally, with our advanced filters, you can easily compare candidates based on factors like their test scores and their responses to custom and multiple-choice questions.

Toggl Hire’s reporting and analytics features

Toggl Hire creates reports for candidate experience, feedback, test, and question performance. This data helps you assess the different elements within a test.

Toggl hire reporting and analytics

You also get overall performance statistics for each test to see if it accurately judges candidates.

Recruiting teams can export candidate reports in PDF or CSV formats. However, this isn’t possible for assessment reports. Toggl Hire also doesn’t support exporting in other Excel formats.

Also, members of your hiring team can view Toggl Hire’s candidate reports and leave notes with their thoughts.
