Create insightful personality assessments with TestGorilla

Share

DISC assessments measure four behavioral factors: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. DISC tests can help you to understand which job applicants are most likely to be a good fit for your open role and your workplace.

Without this knowledge, you run the risk of hiring an applicant whose personality doesn’t fit well with your company culture or who may slow collaboration and disrupt performance. Fortunately, the right DISC assessments will help you get a reliable, well-rounded picture of your candidates.

We’ve researched eight of the best DISC assessments available and offer insights into how to pick the right one for your hiring needs. Keep reading to discover how DISC assessments can improve team dynamics and create a more harmonious, productive workplace.

What to look for in a DISC assessment test

DISC assessments enable employers to determine the behavior types of candidates and employees. As mentioned, the four types are: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.

Individuals can display more than one trait and are generally a mixture of personality types, such as dominant and influential (DI). Results can be subdivided further to give up to 12 combinations of behavioral types.

DISC assessments can include different questions for different situations, so it’s important to choose the right one for your needs. For example, some are more geared toward existing teams, while others are specifically designed for pre-employment screening.

When choosing the best DISC assessment for your organization, here’s what to look for:

  • Scientific validity: Assessments created by subject-matter experts who have undertaken extensive research are more likely to be accurate and reliable.

  • Customization: Assessments that can be tailored with your own custom questions give you more information about candidates. You could ask about an applicant’s preferred communication style, for example, to gain more insights.

  • Clear reports: Reports that clearly describe an individual's behavioral style and also offer guidance on how to leverage their strengths and address areas for improvement help you make sense of the data.

  • User-friendly interface: Mobile-first, simple-to-use assessments reduce the learning curve for both administrators and test-takers and ensure a seamless experience.

  • Support: Providers that offer resources maximize the value of your DISC assessment. For example, TestGorilla offers online and email support and a guide to help you interpret a DISC assessment.

  • Cost-effectiveness: Ensure that the pricing of the assessment platform aligns with your organization's budget while meeting your requirements.

  • Reputation: Feedback from testimonials, case studies, and reviews of assessment providers can give you more confidence when choosing the right service.

  • Integration: Features such as API and ATS integration enable you to incorporate a DISC assessment with your current tech.

Which DISC test is the best?

We’ve researched the eight best DISC assessments to help to find the right one for your organization. Here are our findings:

1. TestGorilla's DISC test

TestGorilla’s DISC personality test stands out for its scientific validity and simplicity of use.

The 10-minute test is easy for candidates to complete. Each applicant scores 48 statements on a scale from one (very inaccurate) to five (very accurate).

After each candidate completes the test, you’ll receive a complete PDF report that includes a clear explanation of how the applicant’s behavioral type is likely to affect their work, strengths and weaknesses they may have, and tips for working effectively with their personality type.

The report ranks each candidate and offers additional analytics to ease hiring decisions. You can even add your own comments and download and share the report with the candidate or your hiring team.

TestGorilla’s DISC assessment was developed by subject-matter experts and has undergone peer review. It’s available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, and Portuguese.

TestGorilla offers an extensive library of more than 400 tests, including other personality and culture tests, such as those based on the Enneagram, 16-Type, and Big Five personality models. Paid subscriptions start at $29 per employee or candidate. Truity offers a free demo of their DISC test.

Truity’s library is geared toward personality and DISC tests, however, so it’s not possible to evaluate other job-specific skills.

3. The Kevin Eikenberry Group

The DISC test from The Kevin Eikenberry Group takes around 20 minutes to complete. After candidates have completed the test, a team report is generated showing their strengths and weaknesses, the best communication practices for each candidate, and how teams can collaborate better.

The team report focuses on how different behavioral types fit together, which makes it better suited for existing teams than job candidates.

The Kevin Eikenberry Group also offers online training on how to use the DISC test and lead conversations about test results, as well as trainer certification, leadership coaching, and consulting services.

Pricing is around $39 per employee or candidate, with discounts for larger teams. There’s also a free DISC assessment for individuals to take on their own.

4. BPT Pro

BPT Pro enables you to choose from 10 popular tests, including DISC, Enneagram, and 16-Types. Once the tests are completed, detailed reports are generated about each applicant.

The report includes the DISC results as well as advice on how to communicate and work successfully with each behavioral type and which test-takers and personality types are likely to work well together

Pricing starts at $49 per team member or candidate, making this one of the more expensive options. However, a free trial is available.

5. IHD Corporation

IHD Corporation is a testing platform offering DISC II assessments, which the company defines as tests that evaluate behavioral styles and temperament. In addition to measuring dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness, the tests assess how outgoing, task-oriented, people-oriented, or reserved a person is.

There are three types of DISC II tests available, ranging from 10 to 18 minutes each:

  • Pre-employment screening

  • Existing employees

  • Financial temperament and behavior

IHD Corporation also has tests to measure job-related personality characteristics and mental aptitude, as well as math skills and a limited selection of job-specific skills.

Pricing is available by contacting the company.

6. PeopleKeys

PeopleKeys offers 15- and 24-question DISC tests as well as the TEAMS (Theorist, Executor, Analyst, Manager, Strategist) roles assessment, a values test, and the Behavioral Attitudes Index (BAI).

Reports are available in up to 36 languages. The company additionally offers DISC certification and training on how to use DISC assessments.

A business account with PeopleKeys provides a white labeling option, so DISC tests, web portal, and applicant reports can be customized with a company logo, colors, and more.

Pricing starts at $35 per candidate, and a free consultation is available.

7. Success Performance Solutions

Success Performance Solutions offers DISC assessments and Proception2 DISC Profile Testing, which measures the traditional DISC behavioral traits as well as what the company calls the “4 Ps” of performance: Problems, People, Pace, and Procedures.

Success Performance Solutions’ assessments are only designed for existing employees. However, the platform does offer a library with tests for job fit, personality, and skills which can be used to create pre-employment assessments. You can also add custom questions.

The Proception2 DISC Profile Test takes 10-15 minutes. Once a candidate has completed the test, a report is generated with information about the applicant’s likely strengths and weaknesses, preferred work environment, and strengths for a team, plus recommendations for performance enhancement, word portraits, and more.

You pay a set price for every test, with volume discounts for 10 or more applicants. However, you need to contact the company to get current pricing.

In addition to its modified type of DISC assessment, the company offers other pre-employment skills evaluations. However, its test library is smaller than other options.

8. Crystal

Crystal is a personality testing platform with a Chrome extension. It works by recommending personality types that best match your open role.

It scans email exchanges you have with each applicant, shows you which DISC traits their communication styles indicate, and offers suggestions about how to correspond more effectively. However, there’s no option to offer candidates a formal DISC assessment.

While there are different pricing tiers, you’ll need to contact the company to get current pricing.

Are DISC tests accurate?

DISC tests are rooted in solid scientific foundations developed by American psychologist William Moulton Marston.

Although some professionals think you shouldn’t use DISC tests for hiring, there is evidence companies can reap big benefits by using DISC assessments as part of pre-employment screening.

A study in the peer-reviewed academic journal, The Health Care Manager (HCM) examined the use of DISC tests in hiring healthcare workers. The research paper concluded that DISC assessments promoted the appropriate placement of new employees and offered a strong return on investment.

In addition to the scientific evidence, it’s also compelling that Fortune 500 corporations use DISC tests for recruitment and professional development within their organizations.

To ensure accurate results, you’ll want to choose a reputable provider offering scientifically validated DISC assessments. TestGorilla relies on robust psychometric principles with tests created by subject-matter experts. This means you can make informed decisions based on consistent, valid, and meaningful results.
